The Oktoberfest Run For Beans 2011
Oktoberfest Proceeds Presented to Brother Francis and Bean's
On December 1, 2011 the running club distributed the proceeds from our Oktoberfest 2011 races to Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter. Bristol Bay Native Corporation President and CEO Jason Metrokin made the presention of the annual holiday gift.
This year the Run for Beans was a huge success having almost 400 finishers and raising close to $6,000. This was a new record for the race and as a result ARC was able to present each of the charitable organizations with a check for $3,000.
The running club would like to recognize our Oktoberfest 2011 race sponsors whose generous support helped make the event such a success. First and foremost a special thanks to the Bristol Bay Native Corporation, the signature sponsor of the event. For more than 10 years BBNC has provided the seed money that has allowed us to host the Oktoberfest Run For Bean's. Also, thanks needs to be given to Kaladi Brothers Coffee, New Sagaya City Market, La Roma Bakery, Frito Lay and the Snow Goose Restaurant. Their contributions allowed us to could keep the costs low. Finally, a special mention should go out to the Pee Wee AA Selects Moose. This hockey team not only paid their entry fees with the whole team participating in the race but also went out and raised extra money for Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter. Thank you!!!

Race Directors Report - October 25, 2011
ARC Members,
On September 24, the Anchorage Running Club celebrated Oktoberfest by putting on its Run For Beans. For those of you who are unaware of this event, it is a race to benefit Beans Café and the Brother Francis Shelter. Not only are the net proceeds donated, but racers are also encouraged to bring food and clothing of their own to donate. Although there is a charitable cause behind the race, the idea is for everyone to get together and have fun and it seemed like everyone did.
It was a very successful event with 399 racers (not including the runners in the Kids Run). I think with the participation of the hockey team, we had more costumed runners than ever before taking advantage of the one minute head start. Having only put on smaller races in the past I learned a lot and will continue to try to improve the event in the future.
If you weren’t there, you certainly missed out on enjoyable event. I would like to thank the many volunteers that assisted with so many aspects of the race. If it weren’t for them or the support of our membership a successful race like this wouldn’t have been possible. Also I would like to thank Bristol Bay Native Corporation for sponsoring the event. Thank you very much.
George Gates
